New Jersey

New Jersey is both flexible, yet strict, dependent upon the nature of your crimes, the period you wait post-conviction, and any crimes committed since such. Crimes involving children, murder, kidnapping, arson, and nearly all motor-related convictions are never eligible for pardon. Expungement in the state of New Jersey is the equivalency of the offense never having taken place, and makes it otherwise inaccessible to anyone in the public outside of government agencies reach. There is typically a 5 year waiting period for most offenses eligible for expungement, however first time offenders under 21 are offered special consideration after 1 year post-conviction and any time or services served.
